When the MBTA's first five F40s were delivered, they needed an auxiliary source of steam heat in order to run with the former New Haven coaches that were still a big part of the Boston commuter fleet. One stopgap solution was the RDC-3 behind the F40 on this inbound Framingham train at Wellesley Farms, which was converted into a steam generator car.
