Pan Am/P&W Mt. Tom Hopper Train at Montague, MA

The curve at Montague, MA provides a nice fallaway shot for the Pan Am/P&W Hopper Train from Mt. Tom, MA. The setting sun at 5:27 pm on 04/26/2008 really accentuated the beautiful paint on P&W GP40-1 number 3003 and P&W B23-SUPER7 number 2216. Montague presents something of a paradox and "challenge" to the railfan. Although it is only 3 air miles from the Railfan Bridge at East Deerfield, getting there by car can take over 15 minutes, thanks to a very roundabout route, low speed limits, and even a permanent detour! Although the train and I both left East Deerfield at the same time, I literally had one minute to spare when I (breathlessly) got to Montague - and keep in mind that the train was doing all of 15 MPH!
