Last Run to Rousselot in Peabody MAThis past Thursday, August 31st, marked the last run BO-1 would make to Peabody. The Peabody Rousselot plant is scheduled to close by the end of 2023, while gelatin manufacturing continues at their other facilities.
The BO-1 Crew arrived mid morning to with two empty CQ hoppers to sandwich between one empty hazardous tank car.
This is by the Allens Lane Crossing, just west of the plant switch. Special signage, created by the BO-1 Conductor, was displayed on both ends of 516 to commemorate this last run. Rousselot remained the only North Shore freight customer, which received service mostly twice a week.
Manufacturing on this site started in 1817 as the Upton Glue Factory. Gelatin was first produced there in 1908, Eastman Kodak acquired the facility in 1930, and sold it to Rousselot in 2011. While the use of gelatin for film has diminished greatly, pharmaceutical grade gelatin is used by many industries.
Many rail enthusiasts came from near and far to witness this last move.
