site of the dam and canal that was used to supply water to the compressor house at the east portal of the Hoosac tunnel during construction. The water flowed from this dam through a canal to the compressor house which powered steam drills and air drills for the construction of the Hoosac tunnel

Fascinating piece of industrial archeology. This looks like one of the bedrock abutments of the dam itself, showing primitive drill holes used to blast a rock face.

On second though the vertical slots in the rock face look less like blast holes and more like some accommodation for retaining timbers of a rock wall.
