Photo of R I P Concord NH Yard Tower
R I P Concord NH Yard Tower

CSX Crews demolished the Concord Yard Tower this past Wednesday morning. Even though this was on the "7 to Save" list from the NH Preservation Alliance, and Herculean efforts were made right up until the time the demolition equipment was started up, there was no saving this piece of B&M railroad history.

Over the years, after New England Southern moved out in 2010, the Yard Tower stayed fairly respectable looking, as tall arborvitaes stood guard over any potential vandalism. It was hard to watch the Yard Tower go from a respectable looking structure to a vandalized, graffiti laden, dilapidated shell of its former glory.

CSX started the demo process in the summer of 2023, removing the slate shingles off the roof, taking out the busted out window frames, and removing the lower door. Efforts were made to halt the demolition, temporarily.

The interior was completely squalid with garbage, needles, torn up insulation, and such from trespassers. Three shells of fluorescent light office fixtures still hung from the once drop ceiling.. barely..

The Yard Tower had no dignity the past several years.. Once a pristine well kept structure, it became a blighted eyesore, though obscured by many driving by on Water Street.

At least the Concord Gasholder Building across the tracks, will both survive and prosper !
