P&L 1921 over Winona Road in New HamptonThere was something special on the final Meredith to Plymouth "Fall Foliage Special" on Sunday 10/19. P&L 1921 looks right at home with the three Budd cars behind it. P&L 1921 and the three Budds were in service on the MBTA, though when the 1921 was in revenue service pulling and pushing those de-motorized Budd cars, the 1921 colors were Burlington Northern green.
The 1921 was one of 6 GP9's the MBTA purchased from BN in the 1980s'. In 1991, 1921 was repainted in the B&M Minuteman colors, and dedicated to a former Conductor, where the engine was used for non-revenue duties. It was sold to a private owner in 2006, moved to Lincoln, and was used very sparingly ever since. When Patriot Rail acquired the Plymouth & Lincoln, they also acquired the 1921 where Crews worked on it last winter, and returned 1921 to service this season.
In late September, the 1921 was taken to Meredith to serve as a spare, but wound up on the south end of the Fall Foliage Special trainset with P&L 302 on the north, though 1921 was not used for all the Fall Foliage runs. The consist included former B&M / MBTA RDC1, 6105: B&M RDC9, 6921, and the visible former Reading/MBTA 9151 were behind the 1921. The 9151 is the 2nd to last domestically built Budd RDC, completed in December 1962.
Winona Road meanders from Route 104 in Meredith to Route 132 in Ashland.. Under this small bridge offers vehicles less than 11 feet of clearance, one lane passage, and it's located on an "S" curve.. One can find themselves "Storrowed" if they are driving a vehicle taller than that..
Seeing the 1921 in action was a great send off to the 2025 edition of the Fall Foliage Specials.
