After the Flood of ‘47Rutland 2-8-0 No. 18 crossing the temporary trestle over East Creek, framed by the wreckage of the West St bridge. Note the crew watching from out the cab windows. \r
Heavy rains on June 3rd and 4th 1947 sent a lot of water over the Chittenden Dam, and eventually the downstream East Pittsford dam failed, sending a “Wall of Water” 15 feet high at 10 mph into Rutland, destroying numerous bridges and flooding a portion of the city. The 83 1/2 ft bridge was built in 1876 and the estimated replacement cost in the day was $140,000. \r
From what I can tell, this photograph was published in the aftermath of the flood by The Rutland Herald newspaper, credited to Aldo Merusi. I found this print at the Albany train show. Historical information from RutlandHistory.com
