Photo of Charles River
Charles River

The bascule bridges over the Charles River are lifting in order for boat traffic to pass. During todays visit, I was surprised how often the bridges opened and closed, and how quickly. It's also cool to see the remains of the supports/piers of the 3rd and 4th bridges that were located here. North Station originally had 28 tracks. In the 1950s and 1960s, 2 bridges and 12 tracks were taken out of service and the land sold. Today, a hospital and parking lot stands on what was Tracks 14-28. The North Station complex today has 10 tracks, but will get 2 tracks back after the bridges are replaced.
