Here was the 3pm "Fall for St. Johnsbury" excursion heading for home at the Historic St Johnsbury Welcome Center which was once the train station. This was taken just south of the Bridge Street road crossing in Passumpsic.

The Fall for St. Johnsbury is an annual fall event that attracts people from near and far. The big attraction was 1 hour scenic excursions that ran south from the station to Morrison Feeds in Barnet where the train reversed direction.

The legendary Green Mountain 405, the ALCO RS-1 built new for the Rutland RR in 1951, and never left its home rails, was on the north end of the train, while red painted VTR 208 (GP38-2) was on the south end with three Green fleet coaches in the middle.

Trains ran 5x both Saturday and Sunday to capacity and enthusiastic crowds, with an additional special sunset train later in the afternoon on Saturday.

Certainly can designate St, Johnsbury as the Capital of Fall in New England!

Visitor Comments about this Photo:

Outstanding classic composition and great subject made all the better by capturing the RS-1 end of the train. It could have been the 1950s. Glad to see these excursions were such a success. Thanks for the reporting
