An abandoned keystone railroad arch looms above the west branch of the Westfield River near Middlefield, Mass., on October 26, 2007. The bridge was built back in 1838-1841, one of nine stone arch bridges that spanned the mountain gorge for the path of the Western Railroad. Major George Washington Whistler, father of the famous artist,
helped survey and engineer the pathway of the pioneer railroad. Several of the big stone bridges
were abandoned in 1913, when the NYC built a short bypass to the south of the original route.
