Photo of Sakonnet River Bridge
Sakonnet River Bridge

The Sakonnet River Bridge, which was completed in 1898, stands 'disabled' today. It was hit by a barge during the early 1980's. It was knocked out of alignment to the extent that it would not close properly and lock in place.

This resulted in the Newport Secondary track being isolated from the mainland. This led to the end of freight service to the island, the removal of the downtown yards, and the erection of the 'Gateway Center' without rail service.

Hopefully, this bridge will be replaced in the near future.
