Photo of Amtrak 449
Amtrak 449

On November 3, 2000, Amtrak No. 449, the Lake Shore Limited, threads its way through the various double-slip switches at South Station, Boston, on its way to Albany to join up with No. 49 from New York City. They will continue westward as No. 49 to Chicago. Those round "ice cubes" are a system to hold the now-frozen ground in place while the "Big Dig" tunnel is being built just a few feet below the main line. Amtrak and the MBTA share these tracks.
