Items From the Past

Some signs of the New Haven Railroad era remain, including the base for a water column (to water steam locomotive tenders) and a flanger post, a sign that warned of track obstructions to snow removal flanger blade operators. Flanger blades on snow plows or dedicated flanger cars could be lowered between the rails and had to be raised at switches, bridges equipped with guard rails and road crossings.
