Maine Central Employees' Magazine 1930 - Page 6

The text goes on to explain that they'd installed loud speakers "...throughout the Portland Terminal, from Deering junction to Tower One, at the west end of Rigby yard, with the exception of Yard 8..." This was put in place as a single train movement resulted in numerious repeated telephone calls to several towers & yards. This way one announcement could be heard at all locations at the same time. Sort'a sounds like radio doesn't it !
