Maine Central #332 in front of the St.Regis Paper Mill at Bucksport, (c) 1970

Another eBay tidbit. Built 2 years b4 yours truly entered the world in 1952. This is SW7 #332 doing what it did for much of it's 30 odd years on the Maine Central, help handle the daily chores in Bucksport. The conveyor in the back ground was made of wood when I was a kid, they 'upgraded' it to steel in the late 60s. That wood conveyor had a nice sound. It's 'clunk/thud' along with ocassional train whistles were part of the fabric of growing up in this small coastal town. When the conveyor turned to sheet steel it took on a twangy, 'bang/crash' sort of a sound. Not nearly as pleasing to the ear. About that time they changed the fire whistle too, from a rather unique steam driven wailing moan to something between a sputtering cough & a gurgling growl. The wail was interesting. If it was half frozen up, or if the steam pressure was low it could take on some interesting variations. It was of particular interest to my generation. If it was 7:15 am and sounded 7 times there was NO school that day ! /DL
