Parking lot

When the New York, New Haven & Hartford's new double-tracked and electrified line (catenary was added in 1914) to Bristol opened in 1908, it ran passenger trains to Newport via the West Barrington cutoff to Fall River. The railroad's officers wanted to get into the popular and frequent overnight ship traffic to New York City. Freight traffic boomed too, up and down the railroad. Cars eventually disposed of passenger trains, and trucks took care of the freight traffic. In February 2002, the transformation was complete. The tracks were gone, and the right-of-way was transformed into a parking lot for yuppies who lived in nearby townhouses along Thomas and North Main Streets in Providence.
