MEC (Belfast Branch) train at the "Beavertail", one mile from Belfast

A Maine Central RR (Belfast Branch) passenger train rounding the "Beavertail" as it approaches Belfast. The grade crossing it is about to pass is for the western approach of the now long gone Upper Bridge over the Passagassawakeag River a little more than a mile upstream from Belfast. (This bridge was destroyed by Hurricane Edna in 1954 and was never rebuilt.) The MEC operated the B&MLRR under lease from its completion in 1871 to December 31, 1925. (This much photographed scenic portion of the grade is named for the spit of land that sticks out in the river that is shaped like a beaver's tail.) (Restored image)
