Hill Climb Drama

A morning in early Spring of 2003 was still leafless, but showing signs of blooms to come out in western Massachusetts. At MP 129 on the CSX Boston Line, a very still last hour before noon that April day was to be interrupted by a distant throb of westbound EMDs under load. Into the curves came Q283 with a trio of SD40-2s in as many different paint schemes. The train was on its knees, hauling 100 empty racks up the grade at 7mph.

Photographed by Jeff Bray, April, 2003.
