Cedar Hill 2011

Another shot featuring a hump tower and huge light towers of the hump yard. Much of the Cedar Hill yard is covered with spent coal, assuring vegetation will have a hard time taking over. One of the largest yards on the east coast back in it's day, this yard still reminds us today of an era where trains ruled the roads.

Visitor Comments about this Photo:

I remember being a guest in one of those three towers as a student in 1962 and watching the tower operator work the switches and the retarders, using a printed out manifest that gave destination and weight of each car. And in case of need, any car could be diverted to the "bad order" track.
