"Above City Point" c1900 and 2012This composite image is of the same spot on the 33.3-mile grade of the B&MLRR taken over a century apart. The upper image is of a Maine Central train (which operated the road under lease from 1871 to December 31, 1925 as it Belfast Branch) passing through a cut in the granite on the grade about 1.6 miles inland from Belfast along the Passagassawakeag River. The lower image was taken at virtually the same location in July, 2012, showing BML#50, a GE 70-ton diesel electric locomotive purchased new by the road in 1947 and which has run well over a million miles over the line in the 65 years since.
