Protecting a crossing (and his ears)Pan Am/Guilford/MEC GP40-2 #315 returns from Rousellot Gelatine in Peabody, MA with a cut of empty covered hoppers. This grade crossing (actually 2 of them) in Peabody Square has no gates, bells, or signals and must be flagged by the conductor - who fortunately has a key to turn the traffic signals red. Even so, the drivers still tend to be oblivious to the train creeping up on them. This often leads to a symphony of train and car horns that signals my kids and me to jump in the car and find our twice a week fright train.
