BUFFALO, NY

NYC 2714 "Riding Car" that was for conductor and flagman to ride on rear of mail and express trains in lieu of a caboose. Obviously made from a coach and would give a more comfortable (and safer) ride at passenger train speeds. On a previous post I referred to this type of car as a "Rider Car", don't know which is correct term.

Photographed by Bruce Nelson, June, 1970.

Railroad: Penn Central.

The CanadaSouthern.com has an extensive detailed description of the entire NYC passenger car roster and it says the 2714 was rebuilt from coach 1813 (blt by Barney & Smith in 1918) at Beech Grove in 1965. "Crew Rider Coach" 2714 featured 2 oil stoves, a 100 gallon fuel tank, and seats for 32 riders. Here's a link to a diagram of the rider car: https://www.canadasouthern.com/caso/images/lot-rider.jpg
