Photo of Slate Picker, West Castleton, VT
Slate Picker, West Castleton, VT

The junction at Castleton, VT. had no way for northbound trains to turn west toward Whitehall. So the returning Slate Pickers turned eastward into a spur line, a ways south of the junction. The spur line entry was a wye. Once clear of the wye switch, the Slate Pickers could shove, caboose first, out of the spur and up the line. Continuing the shove over the crossing and past the station, the train would end up on the Rutland- Whitehall line faced in the right direction.
