Amtrak's No. 84 clatters over Mystic River Bridge between Groton and Mystic in 2000 at track speed. The ten-year-old span replaced an 80-year-old swing deck. Strong backlighting adds drama to what probably otherwise would be a routine photo. In those days, 84 was simply called a "Northeast Direct" train. It departed Richmond, Va. at 6:00 a.m., and four crews later, if it was still on time, arrived in Beantown at 5:20 p.m.
