Nan

No. 173 rushes over Niantic River Movable Bridge between Waterford and Niantic, Conn., at 60 mph. The bridge is named Nan on the railroad, but boaters just call it "Niantic River." Block operator Ray Salois, in the cabin, will open the William Schertzer-designed lift bridge for some waiting boats shortly after the high-stepper passes on this June day. The train left the South Station platform in the Hub at 10:20 a.m. In New Haven, it will shed F-40PH No. 300 for an electric engine to continue its southward journey to Washington, D.C. It should arrive at 7:30 p.m. No fences blocking the view yet.
