June 7, 1954 in Boston: making a bob

June 7, 1954 was a fine day. Harry Belafonte was singing about taking a trip on a sailing ship, but I was singing about taking a ride to Boston on the New Haven - and so, I did. "Mom," I said, "Today's my birthday. I'm 16, so I'm gonna take my birthday money and go to Boston."
"Be careful."
As I recall, I rode a Budd car, a Boston local, to South Station. I wandered around the platforms for a while, and then strolled a little farther than I should have.
Dover Street Roundhouse was one of the places I walked to, in South Boston, down toward First Street Yard, where I was in Nirvana. It looked like everything the NYNH&H owned was there. The yard conductor was waiting for the 0768 to clear, and then bent the iron, and the engineer made a bob.
