17 is comeing at me and I am about to jump on it.

This locomotive is a 900hp S-6 made in 1956. The reason for the large amounts of smoke is when the engineer throttles up a lot of fuel is shot into the engine before the turbo charger can catch up with the increased amount of fuel. This is only temporary and is not a sign of mechanical problems.
