The bridge was built in 1887. You probably can't see it in the photo, but the stones are numbered. A stonecutter in the quarry would rough cut the stone, number it, and send it to the bridge site. A stonecutter at the bridge site would cut it so the stone would fit and crews would put it together, like a giant numbered puzzel.
