Causeway by Midway

This causeway carried the first passengers over the Poquonock River in Groton, CT. Built in 1858, it carried passengers through what is now the Groton-New London Airport, Pfizer, and Electric Boat. Passenger cars would embark a steamer (2 at a time) and ferry over the Thames River to New London and continue on to New York. In 1889 a swing bridge had been built to connect Groton to New London, eliminating the need for the ferry. This causeway remained in use until the 1940's, when the then-Trumbull Airport was expanded and the Midway yard was removed.
