B&ML Burnham Jct. Wye switch stand and Sabasticook River Bridge, Burnham, ME

At the end of the B&ML's 33 mile run inland from Belfast, the grade crosses the Sabasticook River in Burnham, ME, over the longest bridge on the line. This view shows that steel span looking East toward Winnecook three miles away near Unity Pond, the first of seven stations along the route to Belfast. The switch stand to the left of the track controls access to the two legs of the wye which lead to the yard at Burnham Junction where its tracks meet those of the Maine Central's Portland to Bangor main line. For almost 90 years (1871-1960) passengers and mail changed trains here between the two roads, and for 135 years rail freight to and from the communities of Waldo County, ME, was passed between the lines on the yard's exchange tracks.
