Snowblower In The BerkshiresThe Conrail snowblower, SB1000, roars past the old red caboose in the Bancroft section of Middlefield, Mass., following one of the big snowstorms in 1996. Catching the snowblower in action was very difficult as it usually ran in the middle of the night during the peak of a snow storm and returned to Selkirk in the early morning hours. Travel on the local highways and roads was very dangerous and slow-going, and you needed 4-wheel drive to reach the hilltowns along the B&A on Washington Hill. The big storms of 1996 dumped 36-plus inches of snow on Washington Hill; With global warming these days, I wonder if Southern New England will ever see the likes of matching snowfalls again.
