NEW HAVEN RAILROAD - TO THE RACES

The DL-109/PA-1 pair are about to cross from Seekonk, MA into Pawtucket, RI where they will enter the now gone Narragansett Park Race Track terminal with a race track special from Boston. The train is on the roadbed of what was the Boston & Providence's main line to India Point in Providence until it built a connector between East Junction in Attleboro and Boston Switch in Central Falls in order to use the Providence & Worcester's route to the Providence Union Station. By the date of my photo the line was mainly used for the race specials. At one time there would be several specials to the race track from Providence (using the tunnel) as well as from Boston. When the East Side Tunnel was built by the New Haven for PW&B trains it was thought the old B&P mainline which connected to the tunnel might be used to relieve traffic pressures through Pawtucket but a need for the alternative route didn't materialize. This old ALCO is smoking as much as the Pacifics that used to pull the race specials!
