Entering the City Point Cut heading inland from Belfast, ME

The City Point cut on the B&MLRR's main line from Belfast to Burnham Junction is located between the "Beavertail" (MP 1.5) and the City Point trestle (MP 2.0). When made during construction of the line between 1868 and 1870 through a tongue of hard granite extending to the southern bank of the Passassakawakaeg River which the grade follows, this cut was one of the most difficult and expensive portions of the 33-mile line to build. It is seen here from the running board of BML#50, a GE 70-Ton diesel electric locomotive purchased new by the railroad in November, 1946, is still running strong as it approaches its 65th birthday.
