PUT PUT on NYC line thru Palmer,MA 1950's

On a winter day, a New York Central track crew poses for the camera just in front of the Palmer, MA station. The car is resting on track 2 which has now been removed after the crosstrack. The platform between the 2 tracks is also gone. In this photo, the bridge in the background is still there although it was redone in the 1990's. Some of the telegraph poles to the left still stand, frozen in a vine infested environment, thus they remain slightly visible.

The tracks through Palmer,MA are still heavily used today. CSX runs trains of all kinds through here with trains in excess of 100+ cars. In addition, New England Central uses the former Central Vermont trackage and Mass Central switches cars around on occassion. Amtrak's Vermonter switches here as well as the swift passing of Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited.

Visitor Comments about this Photo:

The majority of track cars were used to maintain all those wires on the five (5) crossarmed telephone poles in the background.
