GRAND TRUNK S-1-f 2-8-2 IN PORTLAND, MAINEGT 3406 (Schenectady 1913-1959) pulled the last steam powered fast freight No. 493 from Portland to Island Pond on April 13, 1956, several days before I photographed her on April 22. On June 15th she pulled the last steam powered Portland-Gorham local freight and reportedly was still on the active list until October 4 when she left Island Pond for Montreal under steam and probable use on the CN. GT was the legal name for CN lines in New England - 3406 was a CN engine but had a GT emblem on the tender and had been built for the original Grand Trunk Railway.
